Enhance the Accurate Detection of Pathology

A recent clinical study1 that included barium sulfate radiopaque markers in colonic cleansing protocols for virtual colonoscopy demonstrated improved specificity through fecal tagging. Overall specificity was 11% greater in the tagged group versus controls, demonstrating a reduction in false positives as a result of fecal tagging.

METHOD:
100 patients were studied - 50 with barium sulfate fecal tagging, nutritional support, and gentle laxation; 50 without tagging and with standard colonoscopy prep. All 100 subjects underwent optical colonoscopy after virtual colonoscopy.

RESULTS:
Overall specificity was 88% in the fecal tagging group versus 77% in the non-tagged group.
